Jamie XX, Florence + the Machine and Foals are also up for the British artist of the year prize.

International artist of the year contenders are Prince, Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters, Hozier and Major Lazer.

Adele (Adele at the BBC) and Florence + the Machine (Glastonbury) are also up for BBC live performance of the year. The awards take place on 10 December.

Also in the running for best live performance are Jeff Lynne's ELO (Radio 2 In Concert), Lionel Richie (Glastonbury) Radio 1's Ibiza Prom and Radio 1 Xtra's Prom (BBC Proms).

Now in its second year, the BBC Music Awards will be hosted by Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton and will take place in front of a live audience at 1600 GMT at Birmingham's Genting Arena.

Jack GarrattJack Garratt was recently awarded the Brits Critics' Choice prize for 2016.

Radio 1 will be on air and backstage throughout the event from 1600-1900 GMT and the show itself will be broadcast on BBC One and Radio 2 that night from 2000-2200 GMT.

Performers include Jess Glynne, Ellie Goulding, One Direction, Little Mix, James Bay, Rod Stewart and Mumford and Sons.

Many of the acts will be backed by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Jack Garratt, this year's BBC Introducing artist of the year, will also perform.

British artist of the year and international artist of the year will be decided by a BBC Music panel, while there will also be an award for song of the year, voted for by the public.

Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2, 6 Music, Asian Network and BBC Music director, says: "What a year it's been for music. Our shortlists represent the artists who have created some of the biggest and most impactful music moments of the year. I'm looking forward to the big unveiling in Birmingham next week."

In the run-up to the ceremony, a week of live concerts will be held across Birmingham, showcasing new talent from the city.

A series of BBC Music workshops and seminars will also take place, providing advice and guidance to aspiring musicians - with topics including How To Make Money in the Music Industry and The Art of Song Writing.
