President Raúl Castro presided over in this capital the military ceremony and political event on occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Granma Naval Academy, upon which he bestowed the Antonio Maceo Award, as reported by national television. The Antonio Maceo Award is among the highest acknowledgment granted to the country's military centers.

The Academy was also given a diploma signed by the Minister of the Revolutuonary Armed Forces (FAR), Army Gen. Leopoldo Cintra Frias in recognition of the staff's excellence and the quality of the teaching process.

This prestigious maritime university trains the members of the Revolutionary Navy, the Merchant Navy and the Border Guard Troops, and issues and validates degrees endorsed by the International Maritime Organization.

The traditional teaching methods are combined with spearhead technologies, bringing theoretical knowledge closer to real circumstances of the profession of the people who study there.

At least 15 specialties are taught in the Academy in the command and technical fields at the medium and higher levels. In the past 55 years over 7,900 sea men and women have graduated from the Academy.
