The arrival in Mexico of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez, takes place at a time of transcendental significance for the relations between the two countries characterized, in general, by a long and positive historical journey.

On the one hand, the blockade on Cuba imposed by the United States has been intact for more than 60 years. The Blockade has caused and is causing serious damage to the economy and the general life of Cubans.

Something, as The New York Times once wrote, would not gain the United States "friends in Cuba."

That policy was hardened by the Donald Trump administration and has not been modified an inch since the current White House administration came into office.

In this context, the Mexican nation of López Obrador has distinguished itself by rejecting, in the first place, that hostile policy of blockade against Cuba, and has disapproved of it in the U.N. General Assembly as well as in other international forums.

The Mexican president has also contributed to the normal development between different spheres of both countries.

And more recently, he has come to question the very existence of the OAS and denounced its policy of giving–in to the United States.

In addition, he has sent important donations to Cuba to battle against the Covid-19.

Apparently, it’s a closer relationship between two countries that have been playing an important role in this side of the continent. Especially when the United States faces a gradual but steady decline.
