As Hurricane Matthew pounded Haiti Tuesday morning (Oct. 4), Tropical Storm Nicole formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Its maximum sustained winds reached 50 miles per hour but, unlike Matthew, the storm posed no threat to land.
Nicole's center was 525 northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the National Hurricane Center 10 a.m. update. It was moving to the northwest at a speed near 8 mph. The storm is expected to turn north-northwest and decrease in forward speed over the next couple of days.
Nicole is not expected to see much change in strength for the next day or so, with gradual weakening anticipated. The storm is not currently threatening land, nor is it expected to through Friday.
