72% of Americans Rate National Economy as 'Fair' or 'Poor'

More than half of Americans, 52%, believe the country's economic conditions "have worsened" due to President Donald Trump's policies, while six in ten disapprove of his tariffs, according to a Pew Research Center survey released this Wednesday.
Mixed Views on Policy Impact
The poll revealed that only 28% of the population thinks Trump's measures have "improved" the economy since his return to the White House in January 2025, while 19% consider they "haven't had much effect."
Specifically, 60% of Americans disapprove of the tariff increases, including 39% who "strongly" reject them, while only 37% endorse these import taxes.
Pessimistic Outlook on Tariff Effects
51% of respondents predicted a "mostly negative" impact on the country from these levies, and 52% think it will negatively affect their personal and family finances.
In contrast, only one in four, 25%, anticipated a "mostly positive" effect on the national economy, and less than a fifth of the population, 19%, thought the same for their personal and family finances.
Broad Dissatisfaction with Economic Conditions
On the other hand, nearly three-quarters of Americans, 72%, rate the national economy as "fair" or "poor," while only 28% consider it "excellent" or "good."
Top Economic Concerns
The greatest concern for US residents is the cost of healthcare, with more than seven in ten adults, 71%, expressing they are "very worried" about this item.
Two-thirds of adults, 66%, indicated "a lot of concern" about the price of food and consumer goods, as did 62% about housing costs and 51% about electricity costs.
45% also pointed to "a lot of concern" about jobs, 34% about the price of gasoline, and 20% about the stock market.
Cautious Outlook for the Future
Nearly four in ten Americans, 38%, fear economic conditions will worsen within a year, although 31% are confident they will be better, and 30% say they will be the same as now.
Partisan Divide Remains
Despite these figures, the Pew Research Center indicated that Republicans express their best assessment of the economy since Trump returned to the White House, with 49% of them evaluating it positively and 57% of these voters expecting the economy to improve within a year.
The survey was conducted by phone and online from January 20 to 26 with 8,512 adults, with a margin of error of 1.4% and a 95% confidence level.
Another part of the same poll released last week showed Trump's approval rating had fallen to 37%, its lowest level in Pew Research Center's measurement.
