The grenade was thrown at 1:15 in the surrounding area of the center, but it did not explode.
A security guard detected the grenade and alerted the authorities, while the police cordoned off the area, where bomb disposal experts dealt with the device.
According to security forces, this attack is the first of its kind in this German town, which has a population of just over 80,000 people in the federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
About 170 people are currently in the refugee center.
Germany recorded a total of 163 violent attacks on refugee centers in 2015, nearly six times more than the previous year, according to the Federal Criminal Police Office.
