"The artificiality of their arguments is absolute, their poisoning of people on social networks, their relentless game of 'the worse she does, the better for us,'" said Rousseff during a union leaders event in San Paulo Tuesday.

Rousseff said the opposition, which advocates opening a political trial with the aim of removing the President from office, "is playing shamelessly."

Rousseff's remarks come at a time when the President of Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, Eduardo Cunha, has his hands full with several petitions filed by the opposition urging Rousseff's removal, which he will analyse in the coming days or weeks.

The opposition hopes the Chamber will accept the request by a group of jurists since it has sufficient legal arguments and refers to the illegal accounting maneuvers the government allegedly made to disguise its 2014 fiscal results.

The Brazilian Constitution provides for the possibility of removal of a head of state, but to start the trial, it requires legal reasons which, in the government's opinion, do not exist in Rousseff's case.

The President explained the 'pedalling' was carried out to ensure social programs and the fiscal maneuvers were "administrative acts" used by all previous governments.

Rousseff, who was re-elected in October 2014 for a second term, assured she will fight to keep her mandate, which expires on Jan. 1, 2019, despite pressure from the opposition to "shorten it."

"I am president because I was elected by the people in free elections. I have in my favor the legitimacy of the polls, which protects me and which I have the power and duty to protect. I am president to defend the constitution and democracy," she added.
