21 Dead in China Typhoon

The worst typhoon of the past 12 months has battered China's coastline.

A typhoon has killed at least 21 people in China, state media reported Monday.

The majority of deaths occurred in the coastal province of Zhejiang, where raging flood waters left homes and businesses in ruins Sunday.

According to state news agency Xinhua, total economic losses from the disaster have topped US$1 billion.

Over 500 flights in eastern China have been canceled due to the storm, and at least three major airports were temporarily shut down.

Already being hailed as the worst typhoon in 12 months, Typhoon Soudelor first made landfall in China on Saturday night, after devastating Taiwan. Much of the island lost power over the weekend, and seven people were killed. Over 300 more were injured.

The storm is now expected to move further into inland China, though authorities say the worst is already past. In the early hours of Monday morning, China's meteorological administration lifted its official typhoon warning, though according to Xinhua over one million Chinese have been affected by the storm. In the inland province of Anhui, as of Monday over 10,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in precautionary measures.
