The Venezuelan representative Saul Ortega assured that by joining Mercosur, Venezuela will be better equipped to continue integrating Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Latin American Parliamentary representative Saul Ortega announced on Tuesday that Venezuela will assume leadership of the Common Market of the South’s Parliament (Parlasur) after January 2015.

“Venezuela will preside over the regional bloc parliament as of January 2015 as a full Mercosur partner and as a participating member,” Ortega said.

“It is an important political matter that Venezuela can lead Parlasur,” Saul Ortega said.

During his presentation at Venezuela’s National Assembly, the parliamentarian offered details of the last Parlasur session that met in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

He said that Mercosur will include the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), the Union of South American States (Unasur) and PetroCaribe as part of its political agenda to integrate Latin America and the Caribbean.

At the beginning of November of this year, Parlasur also welcomed the inclusion of Venezuela as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations.
