SURINAME opened Group B action in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 final round qualifying tournament with a lacklustre 2-0 win over Guadeloupe on Saturday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.

Later, in the second leg of a double-header, Cuba also claimed full points with a 2-1 triumph over Curacao.

Neither team produced a high standard, but Surinamese double goalscorer Achero Hoever looked a decent player, along with playmaker (No.10) Jaycee Marsidin.

The diminutive Hoever gave a glimpse early on of what he is capable, when expertly tucking away a shot from outside the penalty area, albeit from an offside position. However, he got it right in the 21st minute, opening the scoring by rounding the Guadeloupe goalkeeper Caryl Dale Andre and beating a defender on the goal-line for 1-0 lead.

And early in the second half, Hoever doubled his team’s tally in the 52nd, by freezing three Guadeloupe defenders with his trickery, before stroking a low shot to goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Guadeloupe’s only goal threats came from set plays. The physically-imposing defensive midfielder Ayan Citadelle put a downward header just wide of goal quarter-hour into the match, and it also took a fingertip touch from the capable Surinamese keeper, Fhabaristo Saling, to keep out a powerful free-kick from defender Jonathan Laurent.

Guadeloupe had more attacks in the second half but never really looked likely to score, although two additional Laurent-taken free kicks forced the Surinamese keeper into action again.
