The World Championships 2015, the flagship event of the International Judo Federation’s World Judo Tour, will captivate the world from Monday 24 – Sunday 30 August at the Alau Ice Palace in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The official draw took place on Sunday afternoon as the delegations discovered who their charges will face on the biggest stage in judo before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Following Friday’s IJF Congress and Saturday’s IJF Hall of Fame gala, the delegations gathered at the Rixos Hotel with a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation.

Judo fans the world around can look forward to seeing 729 judoka from 120 countries competing in Kazakhstan’s capital city. The seven-day event, which will feature 432 men and 297 women, will be broadcast in 160 countries and can be followed online on the IJF’s social media channels.

Mr. Marius VIZER, IJF President, made the opening address at the draw.

The official draw of the World Championships 2015

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, colleagues and members of the media, it is an honour for us to organise this World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. I am confident that we will all be part of a successful World Championships. On Friday we held a nice edition of the IJF Congress and on Saturday we all enjoyed a spectacular Hall of Fame gala.

“I am pleased to inform you that Mr. Jean-Luc ROUGE, IJF General Secretary, and Mr. Naser AL-TAMIMI were both re-elected at the IJF Congress on Friday. We also welcomed four new members to the IJF Executive Committee in Mr. Rene JAGGI, Mr. UEMURA Haruki, Mr. YAMASHITA Yasuhiro and Mr. ZHOU Jinqiang.

“I wish the athletes good luck and a lot of success. I hope the behaviour of everyone is according to the level of the organisation. I would like to thank the Government of Kazakhstan, the Sports Ministry and the Kazakhstan Judo Federation. I wish you all the best and a successful stay in Kazakhstan.”

The local organising committee are hosting Kazakhstan's first World Judo Championships

Mr. Saken MUSSAIBEKOV, Vice-Minister of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, said: “Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, delegates, welcome to Kazakhstan. I am glad to see all of you in our country and we hope to achieve a good motion in the competition."

Mr. Maratbek MYKTYBEKOV, Kazakhstan Judo Federation Vice-President, made the welcome address on behalf of the national federation.

“Dear Mr. VIZER, IJF President, dear participants, dear guests, welcome to our capital city of Astana in Kazakhstan. I am sure many of you have been to our country to compete previously but this is a new challenge and new level for us as organisers. On behalf of the Kazakhstan Judo Federation I wish you all a lot of success and may the strongest judoka win.”

Five of the sport’s finest champions - who will undoubtedly ignite the competition in Astana – shared the stage with the delegations from the IJF and local organising committee.

Japan, Argentina, Kazakhstan, France and Russia were represented by their champions

World number two Paula PARETO (ARG) – who competes on Monday in the -48kg category - said: “I don’t any feel any difference in who I fight against because at this level you will come up against the best athletes and have to beat them if you want to be the champion.”

World champion Clarisse AGBEGNENOU (FRA) – who defends her -63kg title on Thursday – said: “This competition is very important for me. I have been in the last two world finals and I hope to achieve that one more time. I want to keep my red back number as the world champion in the build-up to the Olympic Games.”

Former world silver medallist Azamat MUKANOV (KAZ) – who fights on Tuesday in the -66kg category – said: “Welcome all delegates to the World Championships 2015. We have all been training very hard for this event and as a team will do everything to try to win this event.”

World silver medallist Mikhail PULYAEV (RUS) – who battles alongside MUKANOV on Tuesday – said: “We are feeling very well prepared for the World Championships, the draw for me is good and may the best man win.”

World champion NAKAYA Riki (JPN) – who will be in action on Wednesday in the -73kg category – said: “I have won the worlds twice but I have a habit of dropping my level the year after I win so I don’t want to focus on that too much. I want to focus on each fight and give my all for Japan.”

The IJF is supporting 48 nations to take part in the World Championships 2015 including Cuba, Greece and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
