In the case of Malva Rodríguez, it’s not just about having music in her blood, which is an indisputable truth if we talk about the daughter of masters Silvio Rodríguez and Niurka González, but this young pianist goes beyond the boundaries of heredity and lives this art as a personal discovery, a constant choice.

—In fact, she did not follow the path of either of her parents: singer-songwriter and flutist. Since second grade she chose the piano, why?

—I didn't really choose the piano in second grade: I told my mother that I wanted to play the piano when I was three or four years old and she signed me up in classes, then I stopped when I was about six, and from seven to eight I studied cello. When I had to take the tests for music school in second grade, one always chooses two possible instruments, but I knew I wanted to go back to playing the piano, so I feel that trying something else, then leaving it, I feel that it made me more confident in the decision I was making then. I really enjoy my day to day sitting down to study on the piano, I really like how it sounds, I like its technical possibilities, the repertoire is infinite, wonderful, beautiful...

«I’d choose the piano again, for all the possibilities it has given me to play with my friends, to play with my parents, all the versatility the instrument holds, so tomorrow I can say: I don't want to play classical music anymore, because there are ten thousand possible repertoires, because it’s a very versatile instrument.»

—You grew up among musicians, and good musicians. Do they demand a lot from you at home?

—Yes, but not too much. In my opinion, it’s the demand that any person who is dedicated to music and wants to transmit respect and commitment to their profession would have. Music is fun, but it’s also a discipline that must be approached seriously and always seeking to do a good job in everything one does.

—Do you consider your parents an influence in your career?

—I’d say, above all, in the sense of work ethic, the importance given to details, perseverance, because both my mother and my father are very hard-working people, who have always taught me that discipline and effort are very important. My father still goes to work at the studio every day. And now that I have also started to sing a little, my teacher tells me that in some things I am influenced by my father, he is also the person I have heard sing the most in my entire life, so it’s logical. Of course, I’m also very influenced by my mother.

«Music is a way of life for us, it's not something we do at any given moment. In my house, we're always talking about music and you don't even notice.»

—You've recently started singing. How seriously do you take that aspect?

—I like singing, I think it's really nice to know how to control your voice, I have a lot of respect and appreciation for people who know how to do it well. I don't consider myself one of them, but really when I'm going to sing, I take it very seriously, I rehearse, I learn as best as possible what I'm going to sing... In recent years I started taking singing lessons because I thought: well, if I'm going to do this from time to time, even if it's sporadically, I want to give it the time and respect it deserves. I'm not, nor do I consider myself, a professional singer, but well, I enjoy it from time to time and it's a different aspect that has also given me the possibility of participating in beautiful projects, always very close, very familiar; Until now I have always done it with people I love very much, whom I consider family.

—How do you see yourself in the future?

—I’d like to see myself playing a lot, mainly classical music, doing chamber music, maybe singing from time to time… I love making music and sharing it, I enjoy the daily routine and the magic that entails preparing, in improving, that is, I’m not studying piano and seeking an objective, a goal; I am enjoying the process of perfecting, improving my artistic skills in all the areas I decide to explore, always with the piano as the center of my universe.

«From time to time I edit videos, there was the makeup era, now I’m starting to write reviews and chronicles, which I also like a lot, I enjoy it, but there’s no objective or goal I want to achieve, I am enjoying the process. There are things I’d like to do, for example, play with an orchestra, go on a tour, travel playing and, like I said, continue to perfect my skills with the piano more and more, improve my first sight skill, these are objectives that I set for myself, but it’s simply about molding and perfecting myself. If there was one thing I want to be, it would be an artist. I want to be an artist, to communicate and share what I do, to find connections with people through art, through music.
