World remembers anniversary of Chilean fascist coup supported by Washington
especiales
The world remembers September 11, 1973 -- 49 years ago -- when the constitutionally-elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was overthrown in the military coup by General Augusto Pinochet. The coup was supported by the U.S. administration of Richard M. Nixon and the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA.
The fascist military coup would begin a bloody dictatorship, with thousands killed or disappeared and the dismantling of the social gains made by the Chilean people under the Popular Unity government for three years. September 11th is a sad day in the history of Chile, Latin America and the world.
Also on this date in history, the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City -- on September 11th 2001. The attacks -- 21 years ago today -- would serve as an excuse to launch wars of aggression against Afghanistan, Iraq and a number of other conflicts... all with the design of furthering U.S. imperialist interests around the world.
