The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (PCV) of the XIII mandate unanimously elected the member of the Political Bureau and president To Lam as the new general secretary of that organization here today.

The information was released at a press conference in which the new top leader of the party organization expressed the great honor and responsibility that this appointment represents and thanked the confidence placed on him.

In his remarks, Lam reaffirmed the commitment to continue the legacy and work of President Ho Chi Minh and the recently deceased VCP General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and preserve the national interests, unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

He also mentioned the priorities of work in the near future, including the full implementation of the resolutions of the 13th VCP Congress and the preparations for the 14th VCP National Party Congress, as well as vigorously continuing the fight against corruption and other negative expressions.

Ensuring the prosperity, happiness and welfare of the people, maintaining the socio-economic achievements made over the past four decades, and working for a rich, strong, democratic, just and civilized Vietnam will also be a priority.

Lam also stressed that he will work to maintain the essential lines of foreign policy characterized by defending national interests, being a good friend to all and a responsible member of the international community, and Vietnam’s traditional vocation of being a peace-loving and peace-defending country.

Chairman To Lam had taken over the leadership of the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the VCP Central Committee on July 18 in view of the need to prioritize time ‘for VCP General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to focus on medical treatment, and to ensure the overall management of these party bodies’.

About to turn 67 years old and a Doctor of Law, the new VCP general secretary is a native of the Kinh ethnic group and was born on July 10, 1957 in Nghia Tru commune, Van Giang district, Hung Yen province, located in the Red River Delta region.

Throughout his career he was awarded three orders of Military Merit first class, the Order of Glorious Soldier first, second and third class, and the Medal ‘For the Cause of National Security’, among others.
