Havana, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa toured places of economic interest on Friday in western Pinar del Rio province, where he oversaw food production, a program prioritized by the Cuban Government.

The agenda consisted of visits to farms and genetic centers, as well as meetings with producers, with emphasis on short-cycle crops and local self-sufficiency, local media reported.

The vice president expressed interest in the storage of crops, the production of animal feed and the compliance with payments and credit requests from banks.

He called to increase crop areas, boost the application of science and technology in the sector and promote the use of organic fertilizers, local Tele Pinar reported.

Valdes Mesa also highlighted the experience of farmers in Pinar del Rio to recover the crops after the region was hit by tropical storms and hurricanes.

The Cuban Government focuses on achieving food and nutritional sovereignty, so it has implemented programs to increase food production for the people, export and tourism, and to reduce imports.
