Montevideo, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayans living in Cuba today condemned the interference of their country's president, Luis Lacalle Pou, during the 6th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), held in Mexico.

They expressed their strong 'rejection and condemnation', in a statement sent to Caras y Caretas weekly, in which they emphasized that 'the crude and false accusations made there by him embarrass us'.

They also conveyed their indignation for the lack of respect of the president 'towards a nation and its government that has welcomed us as sons and daughters and we enjoy rights that many human beings in the world would like to have'.

Further on they stated that 'we know that he did not speak in the name of the Uruguayan people, which is friend and brother of the Cuban people' and concluded with a message to Cuba of 'our permanent respect and gratitude'.

The digital edition of the publication highlighted in its headline that Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel questioned Lacalle Pou about the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) to whom he said 'listen to your people who gathered more than 700 thousand signatures against it'.

Among the first repercussions in social media, Frente Amplio legislator, Daniel Caggiani, wrote that 'President Lacalle is wrong to confuse his personal or party position with the position of our country in a regional forum such as the CLACS 2021 Summit'.
