Unions Join General Strike in Uruguay

Most public and private unions in Uruguay are participating today in a general strike called by the PIT-CNT, the first nationwide work stoppage under the administration of President Yamandú Orsi.
The strike was initially scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. local time, but many labor organizations have extended the protest to 24 hours, including demonstrations.
Joselo López, general secretary of the PIT-CNT, highlighted the widespread support for the strike, which demands wage adjustments, the filling of vacant positions, and the defense of real wages under the slogan "The People First. More Jobs and Better Wages: A Better Uruguay."
The Confederation of State Employees' Organizations (COFE) is joining the 24-hour strike, along with unions representing primary, secondary, and university education—both public and private.
Workers from state-owned fuel, telecommunications, and electricity companies, as well as municipal employees, judicial workers, and bank employees, among others, will also hold a 24-hour protest.
The National Union of Construction Workers, the Uruguayan Federation of Commerce and Services Employees, and the Unified Port Workers Union are participating with a four-hour mobilization.
The National Union of Transport Workers supports the union's demands but will continue providing services to the public and demonstrators. Protesters will gather this morning in front of the University of the Republic before marching toward Plaza Cagancha (also known as Plaza Libertad).
