The Havana-based UNDP Cuba Office will launch a multinational capacity-building project to improve the safety and resilience against weather events of critical infrastructure in Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti with financial support of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) of the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States Program.

According to the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, the action plan includes safety evaluations in key water and education facilities from a gender perspective in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, whereas Cuba’s new risk management actors will benefit from new knowledge and tools with the support of the universities of Havana and Villa Clara.

The project will focus on the design and improvement of related standardized methodologies tailored to the specific situation in the three nations through training and certification programs, as well as on the improvement of regional early-warning coordination mechanisms to facilitate rapid and efficient responses.

Likewise, steps to boost South-South cooperation will be taken to facilitate the exchange of scientific information and best practices in order to reduce vulnerabilities and upgrade preparedness.
