UN Assistant SG conveys grief over assassination of Haitian president

United Nations, July 14 (Prensa Latina) UN Assistant Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, expressed today the deepest grief from the international community for the assassination of President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, last week.

The high representative pointed out to the General Assembly that the United Nations family joins the Government and the people of that Caribbean nation in their mourning for the physical departure of the president.

She also wished a prompt recovery for First Lady Martine Ethienne, who was seriously wounded in the early morning attack in the presidential residence in Petion Ville on July 7, where Moïse was killed by at least 12 bullet shots.

This Wednesday, representations from different countries in the United Nations paid tribute in the General Assembly to the memory of the assassinated Haitian president.

Last week, after learning this tragic news, Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, strongly condemned the incident and emphasized that the crime perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Through a statement released by the office of his spokesman, the Portuguese diplomat expressed his condolences to the people and Government of Haiti and to the family of the deceased president.

He also urged all Haitians to preserve constitutional order, remain united in the face of this abominable act and reject violence.

The United Nations, Guterres stated, will continue to support the Government and the people of that Caribbean nation.
