Hurricane Melissa Reaches Category One in the Caribbean
Hurricane Melissa became the fifth hurricane of the current cyclone season this afternoon, after gaining organization and intensity over the central Caribbean Sea, according to the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) in its Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 10.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, the system's center was located at 16.6 degrees North latitude and 75.2 degrees West longitude, a position that places it about 230 kilometers southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
The system had maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts, and a central pressure of 980 hectoPascals, classifying it as a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which has a maximum of five.
According to the meteorological report, Melissa maintained a course close to west-northwest with a forward speed of two kilometers per hour.
In the coming hours, it will gradually turn its trajectory towards the west, with slow movement very close to or over Jamaica during the weekend.
Specialists forecast that the hurricane will continue to intensify over the course of the next few days.
The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology emphasized that close monitoring of the system's evolution and future trajectory is maintained, as it represents a potential danger for Cuban territory.

HURRICANE MELISSA …Melissa becomes a hurricane...
Tropical Storm Melissa continued to move slowly over the waters of the central Caribbean Sea, as it gained organization and intensity, becoming the fifth hurricane of the current cyclone season this afternoon. Its central pressure has dropped to 980 hectoPascals, while its maximum sustained winds have increased to 120 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts, making it a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which has a maximum of five.
At two o'clock this afternoon, the center of this system was located at 16.6 degrees North latitude and 75.2 degrees West longitude, a position that places it about 230 kilometers southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. It is moving slowly, on a course close to west-northwest with a forward speed of two kilometers per hour.
