Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated today that her country could become a vehicle for communication between the United States and Cuba, but she asserted that it must be accepted by both sides.

"We did not speak about the topic of Cuba. It could be a topic we discuss later. Obviously, if Mexico were to become a vehicle for communication between the United States and Cuba, well, both parties have to accept it," she noted.

"Mexico is in the best conditions, in the best position to be able to do it, but evidently, well, it has to be accepted by the parties. But on this occasion, we did not speak about this topic," she said in response to a question about whether she discussed the island with her US counterpart, Donald Trump.

The head of state held a call with the Republican this Monday, following recent declarations by the magnate that he would initiate attacks on cartels on the ground. This occurs in a context marked by Washington's recent aggression against Venezuela and threats to other countries, including Cuba.

Sheinbaum highlighted last December 22nd the historical ties between her nation and the largest of the Antilles.

"The Mexico-Cuba relationship is historical. Mexico was the only country that opposed the blockade (imposed by the United States) from the very beginning. So, regardless of the political party, there has been a Mexico-Cuba relationship," she emphasized.

In this way, the head of the Executive responded to a question about sending oil to that nation, besieged for over 60 years by an economic, commercial, and financial blockade applied by Washington, which experts consider the main obstacle to the island's development.

Mentioning energy cooperation and the visits of Cuban leaders to Mexico and vice versa for decades, regardless of the political affiliation of the presidents in this North American nation, Sheinbaum stressed that ties with the Caribbean country are not something new.

"It is not a new situation, and everything is done within the framework of the law and also for humanitarian reasons," she pointed out, reiterating Mexico's sovereignty and mentioning the continuation of a series of supports that her nation has historically provided to the largest of the Antilles.
