Leopoldo Romañach (Las Villas, 1862—Havana, 1951), with such a long and hard-working artistic and vital career, was witness and creator of more than one style.

There are works, such as the one we are referring to, in which tenebrism, realism, symbolism... and perhaps some other "-isms" seem to converge.

This portrait of a woman, carefully drawn and carefully composed, not only seduces because of the aristocratic stiffness of the model, but also because of the atmosphere surrounding her.

One imagines that not a muscle is throbbing in that face, but one cannot help but imagine that there is a lot of restraint and bound impetus.

And as if to confirm it, those mists, the darkness with which the woman merges. She seems to be sitting in front of her tragedy, as if to prevent the spectator from becoming lost in thought.

This woman does not seem to be seeking sympathy. Rather, she invites you to greet her with a slight nod of the head... and turn around.
