The Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) announced today the visit of its Secretary General, Ambassador Lesly David, to Havana, Cuba, where he was received by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

According to information released in Caracas, the multilateral organization stated that David held talks at the Palace of the Revolution with the Cuban head of state, who congratulated the ambassador on his recent election as Permanent Secretary, and discussed the joint work agenda for the development and integration of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Díaz-Canel expressed his satisfaction that “a person trained in Cuba has assumed this responsibility” and reaffirmed the Caribbean nation’s political will and support to work alongside SELA in favor of integration, the defense of regional interests, and complementarity among countries.

David, a Haitian national, stated that Havana can count on the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System, underscoring that “SELA has always counted on Cuba, and it will continue to do so.”

As part of his first official visit to Cuba, the ambassador held meetings with government authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Ministry of Finance and Prices; the Central Bank; the Ministry of Foreign Trade; the Ministry of Economy and Planning; and the Center for World Economy Studies.

The report noted that Cuba has been a member state of SELA since 1976 and currently holds the Rapporteurship of the Directing Council’s Latin American Board.

It also emphasized that “Cuba has always been committed to active participation in policies aimed at regional integration and development.”
