Each of us shows it in our own space and our own way. Many of us will never get a round of applause. Some of us are not aware of our greatness, but it is a pride to watch those women from Cuba competing in San Salvador, and not only those winning medals of any color.

The most high-profile of all was, probably, the one starred by Matanzas native Laina Pérez. She crowned herself in integrity and nobility by giving back her medal that was not hers. We have read the full story again and again. Not even the shot that gave her the gold medal was as impressive as the act of justice she performed.

"I went out there to swim like a lioness I am. And everything went as expected,” said swimmer Elisbet Gamez after winning her second gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

After winning four gold medals and one silver medal, the native from Guantanamo told the special correspondent of the Trabajadores newspaper: “I spent a few months in Thailand training. When I returned to Cuba, I had a bad time and got discouraged. I didn't want to continue training. My coach sat with me.

We talked and I returned to the pool, thanks also to my teammates.”

Personal commitment, shared sorority, these are some of the features that characterize the daughters of this nation.

The enthusiasm of her 18-years-old was no greater than the humbleness of weightlifter, María Félix Sarría, who not only exceeded all expectations by beating the favorites, but also helped her rival to get on the medal podium.

This is exactly how we Cuban women survive hard times: supporting and helping each other to improve and continue our path.
