Moscow, Mar 1 (Prensa Latina) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, today blamed the European Union (EU) for the deterioration of bilateral ties and assured that his country will respond to the sanctions of the bloc.

Speaking to the press, Grushko criticized the decision of the 27 to formalize measures against Russian citizens related to the case of opponent Alexei Navalny, arrested in January this year.

'The EU is following the path absolutely contrary to the law. It is a dead end that destroys bilateral relations and in no way corresponds to the interests of European countries,' he said.

On December 29, 2020, the spokeswoman of the Russian Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, confirmed that this body gathered enough evidence to indict Navalny and his collaborators for large-scale embezzlement.

For this reason, the opposition blogger was arrested on January 17 after his return to this capital from Germany, where he recovered from an alleged poisoning with a neurotoxin, for which he accused the Russian government.

The case fueled a strong campaign against Russia in the West, including the presentation of this country as a threat to peace in Europe, which could justify the possible increase of the presence of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization near its borders. The Kremlin rejects accusations about its alleged involvement in the case, as well as the use of a weapon of war banned by international conventions to allegedly poison Navalny.
