The coordinating committee of the 34th Puerto Rican Juan Rius Rivera Brigade was established in San Juan as part of the tribute to Fidel Castro on the 98th anniversary of his birth, according to Milagros Rivera, chair of the Cuba Solidarity Movement in her country.

The event was attended by a large number of representatives of sectors of the political, trade union, cultural and social struggles in Puerto Rico, who will outline the solidarity trip to Cuba from April 17 to May 3, 2025.

Featured in the program for their visit is the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the landing in western Cuba of Major General Juan Rius Rivera (1848-1924), the highest-ranking Puerto Rican military officer in the Cuban Liberation Army, as well as the celebrations of the Bay of Pigs Victory and May Day. Likewise, the brigadistas will visit communities, support social projects, do volunteer work, and present Cuban five-time wrestling Olympic champion Mijaín López with the Victory Medal.

Ever since the Juan Rius Rivera was established in 1991, more than 1,700 Puerto Ricans have visited Cuba in coordination with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples to go on tours, work in agriculture, meet with people and visit historical, cultural, production and scientific centers.
