Buenos Aires, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Several members of the Puebla Group, including seven former presidents, today expressed their concern about the political situation in Peru and called for the defense of democratic institutions in that sister country.

In a statement, former presidents such as Dilma Rousseff and Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva (Brazil), Ernesto Samper (Colombia) and Rafael Correa (Ecuador), indicated there is strong evidence that the newly elected president Pedro Castillo obtained the majority in the elections carried out in accordance with the guarantees and norms of transparency and electoral competence.

'After scrutinizing all of the voting records, we respectfully call on the National Elections Jury (JNE) of Peru to proceed accordingly and formally declare Castillo's victory,' the statement said.

Likewise, the signatories emphasize that the legitimate right that Castillo's political opponents have to request clarifications and reviews of electoral documents and processes cannot become a delaying strategy to prevent the validation of results that according to the counts and international observation missions, are unquestionable.

As the president, the Armed Forces and other institutional actors are aware of, any unjustified delay in the officialization of the decision adopted by the Peruvian people and which resulted in the election of Castillo, generates undesirable uncertainties and spaces of confusion for the course of the economy and the stability of democracy, stressed the group.

The letter is also signed by the former president of the Spanish government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former presidents Martín Torrijos (Panama) and Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), various former foreign ministers, former presidential candidates and former ambassadors, among other political personalities that make up the Group, made up of more of 15 nations of the continent.
