President Putin Authorizes Construction of New Nuclear Icebreaker

Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized the construction of the nuclear icebreaker Leningrad, the Kremin press service informed recently.

During a working trip to St. Petersburg, at the Baltic Shipyards, Putin noted that it will be the fifth ship of this kind to be part of the 22220 project series.

The event was attended by the head of Russia’s Rosatom Alexei Likhachev, VTB Bank President Andrei Kostin, Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matvienko and St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov.

The nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project, with a capacity of 60 megawatts, are currently the largest and most powerful such ships in the world.

According to the project, these large vessels are 173.3 meters long, 34 meters wide and displace 33,500 tons. They will be able to navigate convoys of ships in Arctic conditions.
