President of Cuba congratulates UN Secretary General

Havana, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, on his re-election to that post for the next five years.

Through his official Twitter account, the president wrote: 'We are convinced that he will continue working to strengthen multilateralism and promote international peace and security.'

In the same way, he pointed out that in such endeavor the Portuguese diplomat will be able to count on the support of the Caribbean nation.

The UN General Assembly confirmed this Friday the renewal of Guterres, who was sworn in for a second term until December 31, 2026. After being Prime Minister of Portugal (1995-2002) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), the diplomat became secretary general of the multilateral organization in January 2017.
