The president of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), Rolando González Patricio, called today at ECLAC for the consolidation of cooperation between countries and institutions to address the challenges of migration.

González Patricio is participating in the second meeting of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) at the Chilean headquarters of ECLAC to review the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the Cuban congressman said that various issues were addressed at the meeting, including regional cooperation, the causes of human mobility, and the complexities this entails for sending, transit, and receiving countries.

In addition, the issue of the effects of unilateral coercive measures that generate economic problems and, of course, stimulate migration, was raised.

“And, of course, the need to focus attention on the human rights perspective and the possibility of integrating migrants into societies in a coherent and empowered manner,” he said.

The meeting in Chile is set against the backdrop of recent deportations from the United States following the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

According to ECLAC data, the northern country remains the main migratory destination for Latin Americans and Caribbeans, with 26.4 million people from the region living there.

González Patricio noted that the topic has been addressed at the forum by several panelists, and the Parlatino board of directors issued a statement on January 31 in defense of the dignity of migrants.

The document calls for seeking mechanisms to ensure respect for the rights of all persons targeted by mass deportation measures, mitigating the potential adverse effects on their families and communities.

“It is necessary to ensure that no child is left without protection, without access to healthcare or education, due to lack of documentation or irregular status,” said the president of Parlatino.

He also referred to the role that regional and subregional parliaments can play in harmonizing legislation to address the situation of migrants.

This is very important because no country can solve this challenge alone, he said.
