Washington, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) More transmissible variants of SARS-CoV-2 threaten a substantial increase in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the United States, The New York Times warned on Thursday.

The omicron subvariants, known as BA.4 and BA.5, are already impacting on the number of hospitalizations, even threatening those recently recovered from the disease.

Eric Topol, professor of molecular medicine at Scripps Research, stated there is an underestimation about the impact this increase can cause in the country.

There is a coronavirus wave going on, there is no doubt about it, and there is concern about how long it will last, Topol added.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that BA.4 and BA.5 are still no more severe than other omicron subvariants.

Due to the home testing, there is an underestimation of the real infection rate, but the truth is that the proportion of tests is higher now than during most other waves, the CDC pointed out.

Experts say it’s too early to fully predict what latest subvariants may bring to the United States.
