Non-Aligned Movement Expresses Deep Concern Over Events in the Caribbean

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) today expressed its deep concern over recent events in the Caribbean region, including the interdiction and unlawful appropriation, by force, of an oil tanker.
In a statement circulated here, the Coordinating Bureau of the 121-country bloc also condemned the unilateral declaration issued by a foreign power on November 29, 2025, through which it seeks to "completely close" Venezuela's sovereign airspace.
The statement rejected these illegal actions, which occur in the "context of a continuing escalation of tensions in the Caribbean region, which only further aggravate an already delicate situation."
It warned that the increasing presence and activities of extra-regional military forces, including deployments of assets with advanced capabilities, "increase the risks to regional peace, security, and stability," and undermine the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
NAM emphasized that the seizure of a merchant vessel engaged in peaceful and legal activities, and the de facto declaration of an air blockade, carried out without any authorization from the UN Security Council, contravene international law and multiple fundamental principles.
It underscored that such unilateral measures, regardless of the pretexts invoked, carry the "risk of undermining the stability, predictability, and spirit of cooperation that should govern relations among States," in accordance with the United Nations Charter.
The bloc reiterated its consistent position that "military solutions, coercive actions, threats or intimidation are not viable means to address any matter of concern among members of the international community."
It called upon all parties concerned, particularly extra-regional actors, to exercise the utmost restraint, avoid provocative statements and aggressive actions, and desist from unilateral measures that could further jeopardize the peace, security, and stability of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The NAM Bureau reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal and external affairs of States, peaceful settlement of disputes, and refraining from the threat or use of force enshrined in the UN Charter.
Simultaneously, it reiterated its solidarity with the people and Government of the Bolivarian Republic.
