Havana, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez affirmed today that the health and economic crisis caused by Covid-19 shows that neoliberalism exploits peoples instead of saving them.

In his Twitter account, the Foreign Minister argued that, in 2019, 77 percent of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean belonged to low or lower middle income groups, and did not have savings according to the United Nations Organization.

Such conditions are currently being aggravated by the economic crisis generated by the pandemic, which has raised unemployment levels in the region.

According to estimates of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the gross domestic product of the countries in the area should fall by 9.1 percent, figures that will impact people's lives.

The executive secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, recently explained that by the end of 2020, Latin America and the Caribbean will have lost a decade of progress and poverty levels will be higher than 14 years ago, while unemployment will reach 13.5 percent.

'It will be the worst crisis in a century,' she said, adding that 231 million people will remain in poverty and 98 million in extreme poverty.

The head of the Caribbean nation's diplomacy previously said on Twitter that, in the face of this situation, it is essential to generate 'models of productive and technological development based on integration and cooperation', a position ratified by Cuba in different international meetings.
