MEP describes Borrell’s statement on Cuba as interference

Brussels, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) The Euro MP Manu Pineda today considered statements by the European Union (EU) High Representative Josep Borrell about the July 11, 2021 events in Cuba as interference and questioned the aggressions against the island.

In a letter addressed to the Vice President of the European Commission and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Spanish Izquierda Unida parliamentarian described as inadmissible the position set the day before by Borrell and expressed concern for the lack of objectivity demonstrated.

“Once again, the statement of the High Representative leaves aside the constant aggression against Cuba by the United States, the impact of the blockade, the instigation to hatred, explicitly and implicitly”, he denounced.

The day before, on the anniversary of the riots and violent acts in cities of the Antillean nation promoted and financed from U.S. territory, Borrell called on the Cuban government to “respect the human rights and freedoms of the Cuban people” and criticized the sentences issued against those materially responsible.

Pineda reminded the politician that these are decisions of the judicial system of a sovereign State, issued by the competent courts and in accordance with due process, based on the investigations carried out by the local authorities and the guarantees of the right to defense. Likewise, he rejected that the response of the government of the island to what happened a year ago is related to an alleged persecution of freedom of expression and that it includes the imprisonment of minors, since minors under 16 years of age are not subject to criminal law in the Caribbean country.

For the MEP, on July 11 and 12, 2021 what happened in Cuba were demonstrations due to the dissatisfaction generated by the U.S. blockade, a policy imposed for more than 60 years, used by reactionary elements to create a state of violence with the clear objective of overthrowing the legitimate Cuban government.
