French President Emmanuel Macron appeared on Friday at the Élysée Palace for a meeting on the institutional future of New Caledonia, wearing a pair of striking blue-tinted sunglasses, and warned those present they would have to "get used to" his new look.
"I apologize for these glasses, it's due to a small issue. I'll have to wear them for some time, so you'll have to get used to it," the French president said before the start of the meeting, as reported by Le Parisien.
In previous days, social media users had noticed that he had one eye completely red. The detail became especially visible during a speech by Macron before French military personnel at the Istres airbase, sparking speculation about his health.
The head of state did not specify the cause of the redness. Later, the Élysée Palace provided a more detailed explanation. "It's simply a small blood vessel in the eye that bled. It's completely benign," a source declared to Le Parisien.
