José Manuel Guzmán, director of the international project Mi Costa, reasserted the global initiative’s willingness to foster Tarea Vida (Task Life), Cuba’s state plan to tackle climate change.
Financed by the Green Climate Fund, an organization that supports the fight against climate change in developing countries, Mi Costa relies on the main actions underlined by Tarea… to improve the resilience of the most vulnerable communities along Cuba’s southern coast.
Building capacity and awareness at community level through ecosystem based adaptation (EBA) to help people cope with the prevailing environmental conditions of the planet, as well as salvaging and protecting coastal wetlands—mainly mangroves and swamp forests—to counter the effects of heavy swells and strong winds, are among the project’s main goals.
The relevant national authorities and UNDP representatives have witnessed the local population’s willingness and motivation to contribute to this effort, which is bound to benefit around 1.3 million people in seven coastal settlements and 24 municipalities.
