Havana, July 28 (RHC) The legacy of the Moncada heroine and founder of Casa de las Americas, Haydee Santamaría, is evoked this Tuesday in Cuba on the 40th anniversary of her death.

Also a fighter of the underground, she worked together with her brother Abel in the edition of the newspapers Son los mismos and El Acusador with an intense work of agitation.

After meeting Fidel Castro in Havana, she joined the nascent revolutionary movement known as the Centennial Generation.

She took part in the actions of July 26, 1953 from the Saturnino Lora Civil Hospital with the aim of supporting the assailants of the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba(east).

During the action, Haydee cooperated as much as possible authorized, together with her friend Melba Hernández, to help doctor Mario Muñoz as a nurse. In the middle of the battle, they treated the wounded, including members of the Batista's army.

With the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, she worked for a short time in the Ministry of Education until the foundation in 1959 of a cultural institution that would be an emblem among intellectuals and critics around the world: Casa de las Americas.

For two decades she presided over the entity, which focuses on the dissemination of the arts and literature of the continent.

In a recent message, Casa de las Américas acknowledged its founder's work for the integration of peoples through culture.

According to the text, the work of the revolutionary in favor of this cultural institution was key to the prestige it has enjoyed for decades.
