The president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Kate Forbes, denounced today the humanitarian crisis experienced by the more than two million inhabitants of Gaza.

The people of Gaza are trapped, not only by physical borders, but also by political and geopolitical constraints, she said in a statement after visiting the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side of the border for the second time.

The recent escalation of the conflict not only reshaped the landscape of destruction, but fundamentally changed lives throughout the region, she lamented.

Forbes recalled that her first visit to the Rafah crossing occurred 12 months ago, “when the crisis had already reached unbearable levels.”

Now she expected to find a different picture, but we saw people in an even more disastrous situation, she said.

The IFRC president criticized Israel’s decision to close the border crossings on March 2, which prevented any shipment of vital goods, such as food and medicine, to Gaza.

Twelve months ago, the humanitarian situation there was already disastrous because travel was limited while attacks were systematic, but there was still a semblance of hope, a conviction that things could change, she stressed.
