The European Commission announced more than 118 million euros as an annual allocation from the financial mechanism to support the Palestinian Authority for public spending and social programs in the West Bank and Gaza.

According to the regional bloc, the aid is provided through the Pegase instrument, defined by the EU to assist the budget of the AN, the institution in charge of assuming the payment of workers, pensions and other public services.

This initiative also allows the maintenance of social programs promoted by the European mechanism for vulnerable families, medical referrals to East Jerusalem hospitals and support for the administrative and technical capacity of the Palestinian Authority.

In a statement, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said “we have already quadrupled our humanitarian aid to Gaza. After a careful review of our funds, we also announce much-needed aid for the Palestinian Authority.”

She reiterated that the EU remains the largest international donor to Palestine and is working on a medium-term package in 2024, aimed “at the economic and political stability of Gaza and the West Bank”, when “conditions allow on the ground.”
