Italian MEP Massimiliano Smeriglio on Thursday demanded Cuba's removal from Washington's State Sponsors of Terrorism list, and denounced the extraterritorial impact of this mechanism without international support.
We strongly condemn keeping Cuba on that list.
This is yet another unilateral measure that affects the Cuban people and third countries’ citizens, he warned in a video message spread on social networks.
The member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament described the holding of of the third European Union (EU)-Cuba Joint Council in Havana on Friday and the opportunity it represents.
In that regard, he advocated the parties’ commitment to multilateralism and relations based on mutual respect, solidarity and social justice.
Smeriglio recalled that in 2016, the EU and Cuba signed a Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement, to which he attributed the facilitation of exchanges in areas such as trade, human rights, the fight against terror, education, emigration, culture and sustainable development.
He highlighted the EU support for Cuba’s resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly on the necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade by the United States against Cuba.
