San Salvador, Mar 1 (Prensa Latina) Preliminary results from the legislative and municipal elections in El Salvador suggest that the ruling New Ideas party will be the main political force in this country, it was reported on Monday.

With only one-fourth of the votes counted, the party would have 66.17 percent of the votes for the Legislative Assembly, which would allow it to have 56 legislators even without the need of alliances.

This number would allow President Nayib Bukele's party to veto or approve any initiative without the need to negotiate with the opposition in the 2021-2024 Legislature, which will begin on May 1.

Although this proportion could change as the counting of votes cast in Sunday's elections progresses, the ruling party is emerging as the unquestionable winner of these elections.

According to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), 2,748,398 voters turned out to vote; that is, 51 percent of the electoral roll.

Authorities detected multiple violations of the so-called 'electoral silence' by the ruling party, and opened a sanctioning process against Bukele himself for asking for votes in a Sunday press conference.
