Representatives from the 33 countries of the region will participate in the forum on the progress of the 2030 Agenda, which will be inaugurated at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The opening of the meeting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will include speakers from the organization’s Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs; Félix Denegri, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, which currently holds the ECLAC presidency; UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua; and Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
Among the authorities who will be present are the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia, Celinda Sosa; the Foreign Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Paul Chet Greene; the Minister of People’s Empowerment and Elderly Affairs of Barbados, Kirk Humphrey; the Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance of Barbados, Dwight G. Sutherland; and the Chilean Ministers of Social Development and Family, Javiera Toro; of Health, Ximena Aguilera; and of Women, Antonia Orellana.
A decade ago, 193 United Nations member countries approved an ambitious agenda of 17 goals for 2030, which seeks to eliminate poverty, improve education and healthcare, among other objectives, under the principle of leaving no one behind.
During the eighth meeting on the topic at ECLAC headquarters in Chile, a report will be presented addressing the region’s progress toward these goals and delves into the topics of health and well-being, gender equality, decent work, and economic growth.
The report presents expectations for achieving the SDGs, alternatives for accelerating them, and the international and regional challenges that hinder their progress.
The meeting was preceded by a gathering held on Monday, by the civil society participation mechanism and the Forum of Children, Adolescents, and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean.
