Moscow, Mar 24 (Prensa Latina) Russia's State Duma (lower house of Parliament) on Wednesday passed a bill that grants current President Vladimir Putin the right to run for office again.

According to the approved amendment to the Constitution, the limit on the number of terms in which a person can serve as president applies to the current head of State, without taking into account his previous terms.

Thus, the new legislation will allow Putin to hold office for two more terms, if it is approved.

The document was submitted to the Duma by deputies Pavel Krasheninnikov and Olga Savastyanova, as well as by Andrei Klishas, a member of the Federation Council, in November 2020.

The bill stipulates that any Russian citizen under 35 years of age, who had lived in the country for at least 25 years and does not have or has never had another country's citizenship or residence permit can be elected president.

This rule does not apply to Russians 'who had the citizenship of a country that was accepted or part of which was accepted into the Russian Federation under federal constitutional law.'

The bill still has to be approved by the Federation Council (senate) and ratified by President Putin himself.
