Havana, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel assured today that efforts are not ceasing to return to Cuba two doctors from the island kidnapped in Kenya by the Somali jihadist group Al Shabab.

On his Twitter account, the president recalled that Assel Herrera Correa, “one of our doctors kidnapped in Kenya, is turning 53 this September 15.”

He added that “our hugs, our support and the assurance that we continue to fight for his and Landy’s return to the Homeland reach him and his entire family. Cuba does not abandon its children.”

Surgeon Landy Rodríguez Hernández and general medicine specialist Assel Herrera Correa were kidnapped on April 12, 2019 in the Kenyan city of Mandera, on the border with Somalia and the target of attacks by the jihadist group Al Shabab.

Since then, the Cuban authorities have reported efforts for the return of the doctors, as well as contacts with their families. The Kenyan government also reported efforts for the same purpose.
