Díaz-Canel Expresses Support for Petro and Colombia

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his support for Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Monday through a message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) profile.

“Dear President @petrogustavo, the peoples of Our America stand with you and with #Colombia,” the Cuban leader wrote.

He added: “We reject the interference and falsehoods of the United States Government, which seeks to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine in its relations with the sovereign nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Reaffirms Support

That same day, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez also voiced his full support for Petro, denouncing what he described as an escalation of hostility by the U.S. government toward the South American nation.

“In the face of the new imperialist onslaught, we express our support and solidarity with President Gustavo Petro and with Colombia,” Rodríguez stated.

He further emphasized that “the statements made by the U.S. Government constitute a threat to Colombia’s sovereignty and seek to interfere in the internal affairs of that sister nation.”

Trump’s Accusations and Colombia’s Response

Former U.S. President Donald Trump referred to his Colombian counterpart as a “leader of drug trafficking” and announced via his Truth Social platform that he would revoke subsidies and other forms of financial support from Washington to Bogotá.

Trump claimed that Petro “encourages the mass production of drugs, both in large and small fields, which are then sold in the United States, causing death, destruction, and devastation.”

In response, President Petro wrote on X that Trump was “being misled by his lodges and advisers.”

The U.S. president’s remarks against his Colombian counterpart have been widely interpreted across Colombia as an affront and an insult to national sovereignty.
