Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, visited the Antonio Maceo Thermoelectric Plant (CTE Renté) in Santiago de Cuba today as part of a nationwide tour to monitor the recovery of the National Electric System (SEN).

According to the Presidency’s report on X, Jesús Aguilar Hernández, General Director of Renté, briefed the President on the plant’s operating conditions. He noted that while the facility has faced numerous unplanned outages, it is moving toward stability with the restart of Unit Five, producing 70 megawatts (MW) following partial maintenance.

Units Six and Three, currently outside the maintenance cycle, are each generating 50 MW, Aguilar Hernández added.

He explained that Unit Four has been out of service since 2023, but a recovery strategy is being prepared as part of the government’s plan to strengthen the SEN.

Light maintenance is scheduled for Units Six and Three in December, which will allow CTE Renté to operate under improved conditions by year-end, he noted.

Aguilar Hernández emphasized that progress is being made toward system stability, but continued effort is needed to maintain it.

Díaz-Canel stressed the importance of high-quality maintenance for Units Six and Three, as well as Unit Five, which will also require corrective work in the near future. “All this is to continue restoring power capacity and ensure greater availability by the end of the year,” the President stated.

The head of state recognized the heroic, intensive, and tireless work of electric system employees nationwide.

CTE Renté is currently generating 170 MW.

Díaz-Canel praised the broader strategy, which includes restoring thermal and distributed generation capacity, while continuing the construction of solar parks that currently generate over 600 MW during the day.

Of the photovoltaic solar parks scheduled for completion this year, only one has yet to begin construction; the rest are either operational or under development.
