Brasilia, May 9 (Prensa Latina) Deforestation alerts in the Brazilian Amazon increased 63.75% in April, compared to the same month of 2019, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
This year, deforestation alerts were issued for 405.6 square kilometers, while 247.7 in 2019.
This increase happens amid social isolation recommendation due to the Covid-19 pandemic and after a first quarter breaking a historical deforestation record in last four years.
Daily deforestation alerts are issued by the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (DETER-B) and are the basis for inspection actions by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources.
Likewise, official deforestation data comes from the Satellite-Based Environmental Program of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest (PRODES), which is published annually.
