The title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba was awarded yesterday afternoon to 13 workers with outstanding trajectory in their working life, in addition to other high union decorations.
In the presence of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the occasion was propitious to honor comrades with important contributions to production, services, teaching, research and defense of the country.
The attitude and work of the honorees makes them examples of selflessness, spirit of sacrifice and combat in the construction of socialism, assured Isdalis Rodríguez Rodríguez, second national secretary of the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC, for its Spanish acronym).
At the proposal of the general secretary of that organization, Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, the Cuban President, in exercise of the attribution conferred in paragraph r) of Article 128 of the Constitution, issued Presidential Decrees No. 881 and 994, to grant 13 Honorary Titles to Heroes of Labor.
They were received by Julia Fundora López, tobacco sorter; Rolando Carbó Ávila, forklift operator; Thamara Matilde Junco, consulting professor at the Military Technical Institute; Teresa Lluis Rojo, director of the Havana Design Company; Angel Narciso RodrÍguez, assistant technician in hydraulic resources at the South Hanabanilla Complex; and Miozotis Fabelo Pinares, radio correspondent in Camagüey.
The list continued with Francisca Sotolongo Gavilán, brigade chief of the base business unit Industrial Productions of Minas de Matahambre; Alejandro Padilla Concepción, first degree specialist in Internal Medicine; and María Guadalupe Guzmán, head of the Research, Diagnosis and Reference Center of the Pedro Kourí Institute.

Brigadier General Juan Israel Cervantes, represented by his widow, Mireya Máxima Leyva, and his son, Ernesto Cervantes, were posthumously eulogized. His record includes his membership in the Young Rebels Association and his support to the Literacy Campaign. He assumed the Direction of Tanks and Transportation of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and was in charge of the Union of Military Industries.
Meanwhile, Presidential Decrees No. 974 and 983 established the Lázaro Peña Order of 1st Degree for 12 workers and one labor collective; that of 2nd Degree for nine and two, and that of 3rd Degree for five and three, respectively. Decrees No. 975 and 984 granted the Jesús Menéndez Medal to eight coworkers.
The role of the proletariat is decisive for the implementation of the economic and social strategy, said Rodríguez Rodríguez. Members of the Political Bureau, President of the National Assembly of People's Power Esteban Lazo Hernández, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Party Roberto Morales Ojeda, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, Secretary General of the CTC Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, and other leaders of the government and of the political and mass organizations were also present at the ceremony.
