The death toll from the DANA in Spain rose to 63, one from Cuenca and the rest in the province of Valencia, official sources reported today.

According to national emergency services, the Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) mainly affects the Valencian Community and Castilla La Mancha, although incidents are expected in Catalonia and Andalusia.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) commented that this DANA, an atmospheric phenomenon also known as the cold drop, is the most adverse so far this century in the Valencian Community.

Its impact exceeds the DANA of September 2019 and at the height of the two great storms of the 80s, that of October 1982, the “swamp of Tous”, which left at least 30 dead; and that of November 1987, with four deaths.

The sources indicated that six people from Letur (Albacete) and several others in Valencia are unaccounted for.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, said in a national speech that his administration will provide ‘all the necessary means for as long as it takes’ for those affected by the storm.
