The Cuban Electric Company announced on Tuesday afternoon, that the national power grid was fully synchronized at 2:44 local time, after days of big efforts to bring the island’s power system back on its feet.

The announcement was made on the X account of the company. Before the system was reestablished, Cuba was producing power out of two regional sub-systems—west and central-east--, which was announced earlier on Tuesday.

Originally the system has been split into three sub-systems to generate power for the east, the center and the western regions of the island in a strategy that would finally and progressively join the three subsystems for the full synchronization of the national grid in just one.

The reestablishment of the national power grid means returning to a previous normality marked by planned blackouts and saving actions due to the shortage of power generation compared to the country’s demand; all due to the lack of imported fuels for the distributed generation coming out of powerboats and clusters of generators deployed in different parts of the island.

Last Friday, the island’s power grid collapsed after the sudden failure of a major thermoelectric plant, following efforts to restore the systems, another three shutdowns took place on Saturday and Sunday. Finally, the restless efforts of the Cuban electrical workers were successful in the progressive recovery of the power system.

Cuban authorities have reiterated that the unavailability of imported fuels, plus the lack of access to spare parts to keep the local system of obsolete thermoelectric plants up and running are a direct consequence of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade and the inclusion of Cuba on the US unilateral list of states sponsors of terrorism.
